Description: In creating this drum, Dangeli was inspired by his grandmother's explanation that red and black represent the balance of men and women in the world - black being the world before life, and red being the blood of life that woman brings to the world. Dangeli chose red as the primary colour in honour of the Nisga'a recognition of matrilineal inheritance.
Biography:Mike Dangeli is of the Nisga'a, Tlingit, and Tsimshian Nations. His Traditional name is "Goothl Ts'imilx," which means: "The Heart of the Beaver Lodge." He has apprenticed with master carvers such as Randy Adams and David Boxley. Dangeli currently directs the House of Culture, a program that takes a holistic approach to teaching art and culture to children, youth, adults and Elders.
