Artist: Sol Maya
Title: Purple Haze (from the new "Ridgeback" series)
Date: 2005
Size: 9" diameter
Medium: glass
Donor: Sol Maya Description: This glass piece is part of the Ridgeback Series, which emphasize the play of light on the glass through a technique that uses protrusions. Because the protrusions are part of the bowl, not added on after it has been blown, they create the intricate reflections that Maya's work has become known for. Biography: Sol Maya is a Native American of Mayan ancestry whose artistic focus is glass blowing. Maya studied at the Santa Barbara City College in California before moving to West Vancouver in 1992. Maya worked for several years with David New Small, then opened his own glass-blowing studio in an old estate on the west bank of the Capilano River, which used to belong to a personal friend of Emily Carr's. www.solmaya.com Estimated value: $1, 450 |
