Description: A glass casting from a preliminary plaster version of the Speaker's staff from Reid's monumental sculpture, The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. John Nutter was one of the many artists who assisted Reid through the challenging years of Parkinsons and they began in 1991 to experiment together with glass. Bill and Martine Reid had a prototype of this piece in their home before Reid died in 1998. Martine Reid and John Nutter later worked together to bring Reid's vision to life and the limited edition of nine was cast in 2003.
Biography: BILL REID (1920-1998) The work of Bill Reid, Haida, a goldsmith turned sculptor, carver and writer, ranges from the most intricate to the monumental -- in wood carving, exquisite silver and gold jewellery, beautiful prints and massive sculptures. Reid was the pivotal force in introducing the great native art traditions of the Northwest Coast to the world.
