The home I have in mind for Bills work is intimate, following his
creative journey chronologically, and set in the context of the Haida
art of the past that will be an inspiration to current and future artists,
Dr. Martine Reid writes. There is magic to a single artists show, and
a facility dedicated to one artist allows an exploration of the man and
his contribution on a broad scale.
The Facility will display and explain the life of Bill Reid, exhibit
his work, describe the legacies he left, and do so in the context of his
times and culture. Several pieces from earlier Haida artists will provide
artistic and cultural contexts for the permanent exhibit.
One gallery will be dedicated to displaying visiting exhibits of the
work of artists who inspired Bill Reid and who were inspired by him and
his culture; or by those whose work meets the artistic standards of the
well-made object which his work represents.
It is intended that the Facility will become an educational and cultural
centre, which will be an inspiration to its visitors and accessible to
young and emerging artists. It will be designed and operated to continue
the legacy of Bill Reid in building bridges between First Nations and
other peoples, and provide research space, a reference library, and an
auditorium.
It is envisioned that the Collection will return from its international
Tour to open the Facility in downtown Vancouver in January 2007.
